How song lyrics can transform your life

I am an unashamed Taylor Swift fan. #TeamTaylor and all that.

Yes! That was me waving the flag at the front of the #Swifty brigade.

OK, now we’ve got that sorted I can dig a little deeper into her latest album (which, by the way, is fucking amazing).

Anyway, on the song ‘End Game’ Taylor enlists the help of her favourite Old Mate Ed Sheeran and rapper Future. It’s a hard song to quantify. It’s a little bit acoustic, a little bit pop and a little bit rap. It’s trying to be ALL THE THINGS at once. It’s not bad but it’s not impactful. It’s just… meh. There are way better songs on the album.

That said there is a line in ‘End Game’ that struck a very deep chord with me:

After the storm, something was born.

That’s it. Simple. But holy shit balls it hit home, hard. I don’t really like the idea of someone interpreting song lyrics for a mass crowd because song lyrics are generally subjective. There is no right or wrong and any one person is going to interpret them through their frame of experience – the way something affects me won’t be the same way it affects you and vice-versa.

However, I will say this; The line gave me a sense of great joy and contentment because it worked to remind me that no matter how horrible the experience you are going through is this too shall pass.

The person you become after the storm will not be the person who stood and watched the clouds roll in. Through the hurt and the pain and the injustice something is born. Something good. Something true. Something that cannot be broken.

So tell me, what recent quote/song lyric/random musing have you heard that’s resonated with you?

PS: I get how lame and cheesy this post is but to those who feel like having a whinge or a laugh or indulging in an eye roll (no one can see you, save it), I say this:

  1. The lyrics that come to my mind immediately are “I still believe in happiness and I want to find a way, but lately my whole world is being swallowed by the grey.” It sounds dark, but the song as a whole is about overcoming the bad.
