Prompted by the recommendation of a friend of mine I re-read The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. I first read the short story while studying feminist literature at university.
In a TL;DR snapshot, the story was written in 1892 and is a first person account by a new mother detailing her own what would now be considered PND. Only back then it wasn’t called or considered that. Back then it was basically called a “temporary nervous depression – a slight hysterical tendency”.
Gilman is a true trailblazer for the issue of women’s right and mental illness. You’re sure to gasp several times while reading the piece, plus you’ll also sigh in relief to know that someone else out there feels just.like.you.
